190 FENIX The first leaf, unnumbered, is followed by six leaves numbered (in lower right corner of recto) Aij, aiij, aiiij, av, avj, and avij. These are in turn followed by seven unnumbered leaves. In the upper right corner of the recto of each leaf, an Arabic number in old ink has been added: 1 through 7, 9 through 12, and 14 through 16. I t would be logical to expect tlaat the book consists of 16 leaves, thnt is, 4 sheets, although there is no printed sheet numbei, such as "4 pliegos", on the title-page. 4 A simple inspection of the text on fol. avijv a i ~ d the following page, a bit of detective work made necessary by the absence of catch-words, revealed a rough transition: . . . Y no vsan comer en mesas; mas tienden enel suelo vnos Guadameciles, / carne, que esta metida enel altar hasta dos palrnos e s trauessa. Y dode celebra el sacerdote,. . . This transition led to the suspicion that at least one leaf, and possibly two leaves, were missing at this point. If two leaves were missing, then the inked-in leaf numbers were in error. Indeed, the text on fol. 12v flowed smoothly to fol. 14r: . . . Y enla vigilia de sancto Thomas coma [sic for toma] vn sarmieto q aya / mucho años que sea cortado: & ponenlo en su mano. . . This smooth transition, which occurs toward the end of the chapter on Pedro's visit to the Amazons and to Sonterra, confirmed the beiief that leaf aviij and the following were missing, and tlaat the Arabic numbers should have read 1 through 7 and 10 through 16. There was no way of sripplying the two missing leaves in Lima.
