FENIX APPENDIX The besis of this reconstruction of the four missing pages in the Lima copy is the earliest known editdon. This edition, without place or date, survives in a single copy in the John Griswold White Collection of Folklore and Orien- talia of tl-ie Cleveland Public Library (designated C). Additions, deletions, corrections, and variants are supplied from the Salamanca, 1547, edition (de- signated P lor Paris, where tke only kriown copy is located) and from the Burgos, 1563, edition (designated M for Madrid, where the only known copy may be found). Aclditions to C are placed in square brackets; they occur in both P and i"d1 unless otherwise noted. Deletions based on both P and M are placed in round brackets (parentheses). If rnajor corrections have been made to C, the original is indicated in the notes. Variants forrn P and M are simi- larly indicated in the notes. 1 have personally examined C and P. For the establishment of this text, however, 1 used a photostatic copy of the former and a microfilm of the latter. I have not seen M but nave used a microfilm graciously sent to me through the kindnesc. of Professor Rzfael Lapesa. Unless otherwise indjcated the orthography of C has been carefully follo- wed, except that obvious typographical errors have been corrected. Abbrevia- tions have been resolved (e. g., qtie for q, nuestra for nra); in the case of nasal abbreviations, m or n has beeri supplied in accordance with modern usage. The capitalization, the punctuation, and the spacing between words havc been modernized where riecessary for the sense acute accents hsve been supplied (e. g., está, sera mandó). The letter y (07. if necessary, e ) is always used for "and" regardless of what occurs in C, and the original is not given in the notes. In general only the more important variants in P and iVI are indicated, Such variations between editions as c - cc, s - ss, and initial h or no initial h, the presence or absence of c in words like fruta and santo, and differences in capitalization and spacing are not usually noted. There is inconsistency in the use of initial f and h, and no attempt is made to indicate the variations. In general, C retains the initial f, whereas P and M use h. M uses fuymos for the fuemos found in C and P. Moreover, P and M use Catherina for the Catalina of C. These differences are likewise not noted. There seems to be little consistency in the use of sc or c in forms of verbs like crecer, nacer, and parecer. In general, C and P use sc; M seems always to use C. The close examination of the three editions represented by the establish- ment of this text clearly revseals the earlier date of C. 1 should go as far as to statc ihat P was printed as a correction of C, and PvZ as a correction of P. The reconstructed text runs from fok. bv to biiijr of C, br to biijv of P, and Aixr to Axiv of M. In the reconstruction only thc pages of C will be de- signated.
